Inspired by a 17th-century map of Dartmouth Castle, this design celebrates the fascinating history of Dartmouth Castle, once known as “Hawley’s Fortalice”, named after John Hawley, the wealthy merchant, privateer and mayor who helped establish the original fortress in 1388. Guarding the entrance to the River Dart, the castle later featured an extraordinary defensive system: a massive iron chain stretching some 250 metres across the harbour entrance.
