Inspired by a historical illustration of 17th-century siege artillery, this design celebrates Roaring Meg, the mighty mortar specially cast in June 1646 on the orders of Parliamentarian Colonel John Birch to bombard Goodrich Castle during the English Civil War. Capable of launching enormous gunpowder-filled shells weighing around 90kg, Roaring Meg helped bring down the castle's defences and force its Royalist garrison to surrender. Remarkably, the original mortar survives today and can still be seen at Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire.
