A glimpse into the stranger side of medieval England.
This design features two remarkable quirky stone faces found at Brougham Castle in Cumbria, a medieval fortress founded in the early 13th century by Robert de Vieuxpont, one of King John's powerful northern supporters.
Built to guard an important crossing near the River Eamont, Brougham later became a stronghold of the influential Clifford family, who expanded its defences during the turbulent wars along the Scottish border.
The carvings capture the wonderfully peculiar character of medieval stonework. With their exaggerated expressions, staring eyes and gaping mouths, these grotesque faces reflect a tradition of architectural decoration in which medieval craftsmen gave buildings an unmistakable personality. Such carvings could be humorous, unsettling or symbolic, although their precise meanings are often lost to history.
Taken from the surviving stonework of Brougham Castle, this design celebrates the unusual details that make England's medieval castles so fascinating.
A little piece of castle history, with plenty of character.
